Award-winning journalist Erasmus Asare Donkor has labeled the Amenfi East Constituency as the headquarters of illegal mining, or galamsey, in the country. He highlighted the pollution of all the area’s river bodies, emphasizing the adverse effects on local farmers.
Speaking on Ahotor FM‘s ‘Simpieso‘ with host Emmanuel Martey, Mr. Asare Donkor urged for urgent solutions to the galamsey issue in the country. He emphasized the need for the Ghanaian government to strictly enforce laws to address mining-related environmental concerns and dissociate the nation from political interference in such matters.
Asare Donkor supported calls for the immediate arrest of the New Patriotic Party’s Amenfi East Parliamentary candidate, Ernest Frimpong. This stance aligns with concerns raised by civil society groups and the Small-Scale Miners Association, who argue that someone inciting attacks on uniformed personnel should not hold a parliamentary office.
Asare Donkor further questioned whether all the individuals present during Frimpong’s presentation possessed licenses for small-scale mining activities.
