Tensions in Ghana’s Parliament erupted over the status of Kpandai MP Matthew Nyinadam after a Tamale High Court annulled his 2024 election due to polling irregularities, ordering a rerun within 30 days. The NPP Majority demands Nyinadam stay out of proceedings until the by-election, with Chief Whip Rockson Dafeamekpor blocking him from budget debates, declaring him legally ousted.
Akwatia MP Hon. Bernard Badieko Baidoo, speaking on Ahotor FM with Citizen Kofi Owusu, slammed Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s defense as “not law but politics.” Baidoo highlighted key differences from Hon. Gyakye Quayson’s case: Nyinadam attended court, lost the full verdict, and received direct legal notice there, signalling he’s no longer an MP and ready for a by-election. In contrast, Quayson’s injunction was served at home, not a final judgment, and NDC argued improper service barred enforcement.
Afenyo-Markin countered by insisting Nyinadam remains the legitimate MP, citing a filed stay of execution—though Baidoo noted such stays aren’t automatic. Nyinadam has appealed and vowed to reclaim the seat, while the Speaker froze any final determination on his status. Baidoo stressed: Since Nyinadam was served in court and the process ended there, law dictates he’s no longer an MP, unlike Quayson’s scenario. This clash underscores deepening partisan divides ahead of the Kpandai rerun.
