Atik Mohammed has chided President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over his seeming silence regarding the galamsey fight in Ghana.
It could be recalled that the President, years ago, pledged to put his Presidency on the line to clamp down on galamsey (illegal mining).
The President, prior to the 2020 election, put up a Military taskforce that went after the galamseyers to stop them from advancing their illegal activities but this measure was countered by the National Democratic Congress and some Ghanaians who described the move as an illegality.
The President has since not been active in the galamsey fight as it appeared the nation wasn’t in support of his measures to combat the menace.
However, the galamsey issue has worsened in recent times with some water bodies being polluted as a result of the activities of the illegal miners.
Ghana Water Company has warned of an impending danger that may affect the country’s water system and the Ghana Health Service also complains about the health implications of the illegal mining activities.
Speaking in a media encounter, Atik Mohammed held a strong view that the President is unconcerned about the negative impact of galamsey on Ghana.
He noted that there has been a series of demonstrations to attract the President’s attention but he has refused to heed the calls.
“We need immediate and urgent action from government”, he stated.
To Atik, “President Akufo-Addo is the most insensitive President we have ever had in the fourth Republic”, hence not paying a listening ear to the voices calling for immediate action to curb the life-threatening activity.
