Local governance expert, Ing. Issaka Amon Kotei, has joined discussions surrounding the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his reported intention to contest for the National Chairmanship position of the party.
According to Ing. Kotei, Chairman Wontumi would be a suitable candidate for the National Chairman role only if former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were leading the party into the 2028 general elections.
He explained that Akufo-Addo’s “buga buga” style of governance aligns perfectly with Wontumi’s political approach, suggesting that the two share similar leadership traits and could “fly together” if given the chance.
However, Ing. Kotei noted that since Akufo-Addo is no longer expected to lead the party into the next election, he would not recommend Wontumi for such a strategic national position.
He further argued that if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is serious about his current role as the party’s flagbearer, he may not be comfortable working with someone like Chairman Wontumi at the national level.
Despite his reservations, Ing. Kotei acknowledged that Chairman Wontumi has every right to contest, stressing that democracy allows all eligible members to seek leadership positions.
He, however, predicted that Wontumi would suffer a heavy defeat if he enters the race and faces strong contenders such as John Boadu, Boakye Agyarko, and Henry Kwabena Kokofu, describing them as more formidable candidates likely to win overwhelmingly.
