The Minister of Works and Housing has called for additional funds to address phase one of the Akosombo Dam spillage resettlement programme.
Following the Spillage of the Dam, the government allocated GH¢200 million to the Ministry for the resettlement of those affected by the spillage.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on the Dam Spillage, the Chief Director of the sector, Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, called for an additional GH¢200 million to deal with issues of consultancy fees and land compensation as part of the ongoing resettlement efforts.
According to him, the total projected cost for the project is GH¢600 million adding that to complete the resettlement process within a year, the Ministry requires the full amount.
If the project is extended to two or three years, he explained that additional funding of GH¢200 million per year will be necessary.
Rev. Osei stressed that the Ministry has prioritised the affected homes and is seeking the necessary funds to fast-track the resettlement process.
“We projected about 600 million cedis to do the project, but currently we have 200 million cedis. So if you have to do it in a year, it means that we need 600 million to be released for the resettlement process.”
“If it’s going to be two years, that means that we need an additional 200 to make it four so that we can fast-track it and do it in two years. If it is to be three years more, then we need 200 million every year. So we are asking for additional funds if we have to do it in a year. We have the numbers and the prioritised homes to be revealed.”
