Akosombo Comeback: 280MW Restored, Full Operations Expected Soon

ACCRA, Ghana, 27th April: The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced significant progress in restoring power generation at the Akosombo Dam, following the recent fire outbreak.

According to the Minister, two power generation units have successfully been brought back into operation, contributing approximately 280 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.

He further disclosed that a third unit is expected to come on stream shortly, adding an additional 140MW.

Dr. Jinapor assured that efforts are on track to fully restore all six units at the facility by the close of the week.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency on April 27, the Minister highlighted the tireless efforts of engineers working under extremely challenging conditions to stabilize the power system.

“Our engineers have remained on site, with some working continuously for three days without leaving. They have operated around the clock under very extreme and difficult conditions to restore operations. It has taken hard work, determination, and resilience. When I visited the dam site and received the briefing, it was clear the situation was very challenging,” he stated.

He commended the dedication and professionalism of the technical teams, praising their commitment to restoring the system.

“I wish to seize this opportunity to commend and salute our engineers and technical teams who have remained on site, working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to restore the system to full operation. Your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment in the face of these daunting challenges are truly commendable. I salute you, I thank you, and I am immensely proud of what you have achieved so far,” he added.
