The third edition of the Ahotor Academic Showdown, organised by Ahotor FM in collaboration with the Tema West Municipal Education Directorate, is set to begin on September 19, 2026, with 24 schools expected to compete for academic honours.
The competition, held under the theme “The Battle of the Brains,” is aimed at promoting academic excellence, healthy competition and a strong culture of learning among Junior High School students in the Tema West Municipality.
The third edition will feature 23 public schools and one private school, with contestants competing in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Computer Studies.
The Academic Showdown will be broadcast every Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with the competition taking place at the Ahotor FM studios. Participating students are expected to prepare thoroughly across the JHS curriculum.
According to the Quiz Master of the Academic Showdown, Braveheart Ramsel Asonkey, a Mathematics teacher and member of the District Teacher Support Team, the competition has been structured into four main rounds to test the students’ knowledge, thinking abilities and responses under pressure.
He explained that the first round will consist of multiple-choice questions, with contestants answering individually, while subsequent rounds will further test their knowledge and ability to respond to different types of questions. The fourth round will involve true-or-false questions and will form part of the final stage of the competition.
Mr Asonkey said the format has been refined based on lessons from previous editions, as well as feedback from teachers and education stakeholders. He added that a pilot phase was conducted before schools registered for the competition to assess the format, identify areas for improvement and establish clear guidelines for the contest.
He urged participating students to prepare adequately, particularly by revising the JHS curriculum, and said the Academic Showdown should not be viewed solely as a contest but also as an opportunity for students to build confidence, sharpen their thinking skills and learn in a competitive environment.
The initiative is being supported by education stakeholders, who have commended Ahotor FM for promoting academic development and providing students with an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
