Nigerian music icon Davido has once again emphasized the power of African entertainment in reshaping the world’s perception of the continent.
In a recent interview with Apple Music, the award-winning artist discussed his new album, his personal journey, and Africa’s rising global influence. While candid about the continent’s ongoing leadership challenges, Davido highlighted how music, fashion, and pop culture have united Africans and elevated their global image.
“Every successful person who’s made it knows—there’s no real way to describe that feeling,” he shared, reflecting on his growth and the pride that now surrounds African identity.
Recalling his early days as a student abroad, Davido noted how misconceptions about Africa were once rampant. “I remember flying from Lagos to school and classmates asking if we even had airports. Now, people are tracing their roots and trying to reconnect with their ancestry.”
He continued, “This past December, there were more Americans than Nigerians in Lagos. I was there for just a week and didn’t want to leave. Back then, we couldn’t wait to visit America—now, people can’t wait to come home.”
Beyond just music, Davido pointed out how African culture as a whole is gaining international attention. “Go to Paris Fashion Week—80% of the models and creative directors are African. Entertainment has completely changed the narrative. We may not have the best leaders, and our governments are among the worst, but our music and culture are unmatched. The moment that music starts playing—wow.”
