AFCON 2025 Semi-Final Drama: Senegal Edge Egypt, Morocco Overcome Nigeria on Penalties to Set Up Epic Final

In a dramatic double-header of semi-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 hosted by Morocco, both matches delivered high tension but contrasting styles of play, ultimately securing the finalists for the showpiece event on Sunday.

Senegal advanced first by defeating Egypt 1-0 in Tangier. The Teranga Lions dominated much of the encounter against Mohamed Salah’s Pharaohs, controlling possession and creating the better chances in a tightly contested, low-scoring affair reminiscent of their previous high-stakes meetings.

The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when Sadio Mané, once again proving his big-game pedigree, latched onto a loose ball and unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box to beat the goalkeeper and send Senegal through.

Egypt pushed desperately in the closing stages but could only muster a late effort on target, falling short in their bid for an eighth continental crown. This result marked another frustrating knockout exit for the Pharaohs and extended Mané’s strong record against Salah in crucial clashes.

Later in Rabat, the second semi-final saw hosts Morocco overcome Nigeria in a grueling defensive battle that ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, including extra time.

The Atlas Lions pressed forward more aggressively throughout, generating pressure and opportunities against a resilient Super Eagles side that struggled to create clear chances, managing just two shots from open play across the entire match.

With no goals to separate the teams, the contest went to penalties. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou (Bono) was the hero once again for Morocco, producing two crucial saves, while Youssef En-Nesyri converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a 4-2 shootout victory.

This triumph booked Morocco’s place in their first AFCON final since 2004, keeping alive their dream of lifting the trophy on home soil for the first time in 50 years (since 1976).

The stage is now set for an epic final: Senegal versus Morocco. The 2021 champions, led by the experienced Mané and a solid defensive unit, will face a buoyant host nation energized by their passionate supporters and stars like Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Díaz. With the tournament delivering plenty of drama so far, this clash promises to be a fitting climax to AFCON 2025.

The AFCON 2025 final will be played on Sunday, 18 January, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Egypt and Nigeria will contest the third-place play-off on Saturday, 17 January, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
