Afari Military Hospital: “Kennedy Agyapong Said Nothing But the Truth” – Abraham Koomson

TEMA, Ghana, 20th June: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on Ghanaians to give the current government more time to govern, arguing that it has been in office for only a little over a year and should not be subjected to unfair criticism.

According to Mr. Koomson, attempts by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to fault the government over the non-completion of the Afari Military Hospital are misplaced, especially considering that the previous administration failed to complete the project during its eight years in power.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, June 20, Mr. Koomson commended former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, for openly criticizing his own party’s handling of the hospital project.

He noted that Kennedy Agyapong deserved credit for acknowledging that the NPP administration did not do enough to ensure the completion and operationalization of the Afari Military Hospital despite having eight years in office.

In a rare public admission, Mr. Agyapong reportedly questioned his party’s record on the project, stating that the NPP government failed to make the facility fully operational during its tenure.

His comments have reignited public discussion about the status of the Afari Military Hospital, a major healthcare infrastructure project that many believe could significantly improve access to quality medical services in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Reacting to the former lawmaker’s remarks, Mr. Koomson said Kennedy Agyapong had merely spoken the truth, regardless of the political implications of his comments.

Mr. Koomson further urged the government not to be distracted by criticisms from the opposition NPP, insisting that one year in office is too short a period to fairly assess the administration’s performance, particularly on inherited projects.

He argued that the government should remain focused on delivering its development agenda rather than responding to political attacks from those who had ample opportunity to complete the project while they were in power.

According to him, if the NPP was unable to complete the Afari Military Hospital after eight years in government, it would be unreasonable to expect the current administration to resolve all outstanding challenges within just over a year in office.
