Adekunle Gold to Co-Produce Documentary on 100 Years of Yoruba Music History

 

Award-winning musician Adekunle Gold is set to co-produce an upcoming documentary titled “The Odyssey”, which explores the 100-year history of Yoruba music in collaboration with White House Productions.

The documentary delves into the evolution and influence of various Yoruba music subgenres, including Were, Sakara, Apala, Juju, AfroJuju, and Fuji, among others. It aims to illuminate the cultural significance of Yoruba music and its lasting impact on Afrobeats and global music culture.

With Bobo Omotayo as the executive producer, the project boasts a stellar production team, including Adekunle Gold, Tosin Ashafa, Papa Omotayo, and acclaimed director Abba Makama. Their collective expertise ensures an authentic and engaging portrayal of Yoruba music’s rich legacy.

Director Abba Makama shared: “Working with producers who bring such diverse perspectives has been an enriching experience. Adekunle Gold’s involvement has added a dynamic layer to the narrative. We’ve already captured some remarkable interviews.”

Adekunle Gold expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “This documentary is not just another project—it’s a celebration of a sound that has shaped music culture worldwide. I’m thrilled to work with this incredible team to bring this story to life with authenticity and passion.”

The documentary features interviews with legendary artists, music historians, producers, academics, and industry figures, bridging the past and present of Yoruba music.

In addition, the project includes a creative collaboration with award-winning photographer Andrew Esiebo. His behind-the-scenes photography captures intimate and powerful moments with the documentary’s subjects, which will be showcased in a special exhibition alongside the film’s premiere.

Executive Producer Bobo Omotayo emphasized the team’s dedication to showcasing Yoruba music’s essence: “Our aim is to honor the depth and diversity of Yoruba music.With Adekunle Gold on board, we are even more inspired to deliver an extraordinary documentary.”

The team is actively exploring opportunities for brand collaborations to further enhance the project.

“The Odyssey” is currently in production, and its release date will be announced soon. The film promises an immersive experience, combining visual and auditory storytelling to celebrate Yoruba music’s enduring legacy.
