Accra Reset Launches Powerful Global Panel to Reshape World Health Governance

A bold new step toward redefining global health leadership has been announced under Ghana’s Accra Reset initiative, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama.

The initiative has unveiled an influential high-level panel tasked with reforming the global health architecture to better reflect the needs and voices of developing nations.

The newly constituted 18-member panel brings together globally respected leaders, policymakers, and health experts with a clear mission: to produce practical and actionable proposals that will transform how global health systems are governed.

At the heart of this effort is a push to shift developing countries often referred to as the Global South from passive recipients of health policies to active decision-makers shaping their own futures.

The panel is co-chaired by distinguished international figures including Peter Piot, El Hadj As Sy, Nísia Trindade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin. Their combined experience spans global health leadership, governance, and policy reform.

Supporting the panel’s work is a High-Level Consultative Group, designed to ensure structured engagement with major global health institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO), World Trade Organization (WTO), the Global Fund, Africa CDC, and the International Finance Corporation.

This collaborative approach aims to bridge gaps between global institutions and the realities faced by countries in Africa, Asia, and other developing regions.

Adding further depth to the initiative, Michel Sidibé has been appointed as Special Advisor and Envoy to the panel’s co-chairs. With decades of experience in global health systems, his role is expected to guide the panel’s reform agenda with practical insight and strategic direction.

The panel is expected to begin work immediately, with its recommendations to be shaped and endorsed through engagement with major international bodies, including the World Health Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly.

The Accra Reset initiative signals a growing determination among African leaders and their global partners to challenge existing inequalities in international systems. By prioritizing sovereignty, fairness, and inclusion, the initiative positions Ghana at the forefront of a global conversation about justice in health governance.
