The Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Hon. Dennis Adjanor Nartey, has announced the demolition of street traders on pavements and overpasses, starting with Kaneshie Market. The initiative aims to decongest these areas and ensure that they are used for their intended purpose – movement. According to Hon. Nartey, the traders are being evacuated from over and under bridges because they were designed for pedestrian and vehicular movement, not for selling.
The NADMO Director emphasized that a Task Force has been established to conduct continuous checks and prevent the traders from returning. He acknowledged that some people can be stubborn and may try to return to their previous locations, but the Task Force will be vigilant in enforcing the new regulations. The goal is to keep the pavements and overpasses clear of congestion and ensure that they are safe and accessible to all.
The demolition of street traders on pavements and overpasses is part of a broader effort to improve the urban environment and promote orderly development in Accra. By enforcing regulations and preventing unauthorized trading, the authorities aim to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. The initiative also reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more livable and sustainable city.
In addition to demolishing unauthorized trading structures, the authorities are also working to assess the condition of pavements and identify potential problems before they become major issues. This includes inspecting the stands and infrastructure to ensure that they are safe and secure. By taking a proactive approach, the government can prevent accidents and ensure that the urban environment is well-maintained.
The Task Force established by NADMO will play a crucial role in enforcing the new regulations and preventing the traders from returning. The team will conduct regular checks and patrols to ensure that the pavements and overpasses are clear of unauthorized trading activities. By working together with other stakeholders, including the police and local authorities, the Task Force can help to create a safer and more orderly urban environment.
The demolition of street traders on pavements and overpasses is a significant step towards improving the urban environment in Accra. By enforcing regulations and preventing unauthorized trading, the authorities can reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. The initiative also reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more livable and sustainable city, and it is hoped that it will have a positive impact on the lives of Accra’s residents.
