Abraham Koomson Urges EC Chair Jean Mensa to Resign Amid Fresh Removal Threats – AUDIO

TEMA, Ghana, 21 February: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to voluntarily resign from her position, warning that renewed efforts are underway to have her removed from office.

According to Mr. Koomson, the EC Chair and her deputies may not withstand what he described as an imminent “second wave” of petitions expected to be filed against them.

His comments come against the backdrop of earlier attempts to remove the EC leadership, including the Chairperson and her deputies, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, following allegations of misconduct and concerns about the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.

A staff member of the Commission, Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, had formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate constitutional processes for their removal.

However, in February 2026, the Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, determined that no prima facie case had been established against the EC Chairperson and her deputies, effectively dismissing the petitions seeking their removal.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, February 21, Mr. Koomson acknowledged the Chief Justice’s position but insisted that new petitions were likely to emerge, which, in his view, could ultimately force the EC leadership out of office.

He maintained that under the circumstances, it would be prudent for the EC Chairperson to step down quietly rather than face prolonged public and legal battles.
