Abraham Koomson: Government Too Slow in Prosecuting Past Officials Behind Financial Scandals

Tema, Ghana – Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has said the current administration has delayed in arresting and prosecuting individuals implicated in corrupt acts under the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show with host Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson expressed frustration over the continued freedom of certain individuals he believes played significant roles in various financial irregularities under the previous administration.

According to him, some of the people who should be facing prosecution are instead openly criticising the current government.

His comments follow a controversial memo by embattled former National Signals Bureau (NSB) boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, addressed to the National Security Coordinator.

In the memo, Adu-Boahene claimed that over GH¢8 million was disbursed to opposition political parties to support the procurement of election collation logistics and equipment.

He also alleged that the GH¢49 million he is accused of misappropriating was used for covert national security operations.

Furthermore, Adu-Boahene accused the Attorney General of engaging in what he described as a “malicious prosecution” against him.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Koomson dismissed Adu-Boahene’s claims as “baseless,” insisting that the former NSB boss should have already been behind bars rather than issuing statements.

“He should have been in jail by now instead of talking,” Mr. Koomson said bluntly.

In addition to this, the GFL Secretary General called for a thorough investigation into the reported disappearance of containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He also urged the government to arrest all those who were involved in or supervised mismanagement at ECG—acts he believes have contributed to persistent power outages in parts of the country.

Mr. Koomson went further to single out current Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who once served as Board Chair of ECG, asserting that he should be held accountable and “behind bars instead of being a loudmouth critic of the current administration.”

He concluded by urging the government to fast-track investigations into past officials who, in his view, deliberately caused financial loss to the state, and ensure they face the full force of the law.
