Abraham Koomson Calls on TDC and TMA to Resolve Permit Disputes Over Containers and Kiosks

TEMA, Ghana, 20 December: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has reiterated the need for the TDC Company Ltd (TDC) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to urgently resolve misunderstandings surrounding permits for containers and kiosks within the metropolis.

According to Mr. Koomson, while he does not support the indiscriminate placement of containers and kiosks, it is deeply troubling when citizens who have been issued valid permits by the TMA have their structures demolished by another state institution such as the TDC.

He warned that such actions create confusion, cause hardship for ordinary citizens, and negatively affect the image of the government.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, December 20, Mr. Koomson urged the TDC to engage the TMA to establish why permits were issued in the first place, rather than punishing individuals who acted in good faith based on official approvals.

“I am not saying people should be allowed to populate the city with kiosks or containers, but if someone has a permit from the TMA and another government agency like TDC goes ahead to demolish the structure, it is worrying. What stops you from finding out from the TMA why the permit was issued instead of making the innocent citizen suffer?” he questioned.

Mr. Koomson called on both the TMA and the TDC to strengthen collaboration and coordination to prevent further hardship for traders and residents.

He cautioned that inflicting unnecessary suffering on citizens through poor coordination between state institutions amounts to injustice, stressing that government agencies must work together in the interest of the people.
