Abraham Koomson calls for review of Supreme Court ruling on birth certificates

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called for the Supreme Court to overturn its ruling on the use of birth certificates as evidence of Ghanaian citizenship, arguing that the legal position requires further scrutiny.

Speaking during the Thursday Class segment of Adekyee Mu Nsem, hosted by Nana Dogbe on Ahotor 92.3 FM on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Mr Koomson questioned the rationale behind the ruling, particularly in relation to the use of birth certificates in obtaining Ghanaian passports and determining citizenship.

He expressed concern about what he considers an inconsistency in the treatment of birth certificates, arguing that their role in establishing a person’s identity and citizenship should be clearly defined under Ghanaian law.

According to Mr Koomson, the ruling associated with former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah should be reconsidered to ensure consistency in how birth certificates are treated in matters involving national identity and citizenship.

The GFL Secretary-General maintained that the legal framework should provide clearer guidance on the circumstances under which birth certificates can be relied upon to establish citizenship. He argued that a review of the ruling would help address concerns about the interpretation and application of citizenship laws.

However, a birth certificate does not automatically establish Ghanaian citizenship in every case. Citizenship is determined by the applicable constitutional and legal requirements, and the use of a birth certificate in a passport application is distinct from the legal determination of citizenship.
