Abolish BECE . . . It’s of No Value – Nana Ofori Owusu
Nana Ofori Owusu, Chairman for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has questioned the logic in students at the basic education level writing BECE.
According to Nana Ofori Owusu, the compulsive demand for students to write BECE contributes to streetism. To him, BECE is unnecessary, hence should be scrapped.
We have to be very serious with our education. The way our education system is going, it is not doing us any good. It creates streetism. He emphasized; You must abolish it. It is of no value.
Nana Ofori Owusu gave these comments in relation to the uncertainty hanging around this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Government owes the examining body, WAEC, over 90 million cedis and, reportedly, if it fails to pay 50 percent of the debt, the examination may be in jeopardy.
WAEC, according to reports, has received only GH¢2.3 million out of GH¢95.83 million which, to them, is not enough to organize the exams scheduled to begin on Monday, July 8 to July 15.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the WAEC, John Kapi indicated in an interview with the media that the examination will come off. We have done the preparations . . . We can indeed do it. The printing and stationery are all ready
