Aboabo No. 1 M/A Primary School in Danger: Collapsing Structure Sparks Fear, PTA Appeals for Government Support

Parents of pupils at Aboabo No. 1 in the Dormaa Central Municipality are living in constant fear due to the deteriorating state of the Aboabo No. 1 M/A Primary School building, which is reportedly on the verge of collapse.

The situation has created serious anxiety among both parents and teachers, as students attend classes daily under a structure described as unsafe and hazardous.

Speaking in an interview, the PTA Chairman, Nana Amponsah Nyame, expressed deep concern over the poor condition of the school, blaming it largely on the lack of government support. He explained that the community has been struggling on its own to improve the school’s infrastructure but has been unable to meet the standards required for effective teaching and learning.

According to him, the community organised a fundraising event ahead of the 2024 general elections in an effort to raise funds to construct a new and safer school building. However, he revealed that several promises made by some notable individuals were not fulfilled, leaving the community unable to carry out the intended project.

Nana Amponsah Nyame noted that although pupils have been moved into improvised structures, these facilities are weak and unsafe, increasing the fear among parents who worry that the building could collapse and result in a major tragedy.

He further disclosed that the roofing of the structures is heavily damaged and leaks during rainfall, frequently disrupting classroom activities. He added that the poor state of the school infrastructure has negatively affected academic performance, as teaching and learning continue to suffer.

The PTA Chairman also revealed that letters have been sent to the Municipal Chief Executive and other government authorities, appealing for urgent intervention, but no significant response has been received.

Some of the pupils also shared their frustrations, stating that the unsafe building makes it difficult to concentrate, especially during hot weather due to excessive heat, and during rainy periods due to severe leakages.

They have therefore appealed to the government and relevant stakeholders to urgently support the school, warning that the current structure remains a serious threat to their safety.
