Peter Somuah pays homage to Highlife with new album

Ghanaian trumpet and flugelhorn player Peter Somuah pays tribute to Highlife with his new album, aptly titled ‘Highlife’. Released by ACT Music, a recording label based in Berlin, the album features ten tracks and showcases the essence of this genre, often considered Ghana’s cultural contribution to the world.

The album was recorded in both Germany and Ghana and includes collaborations with well-known artists such as Agya Koo Nimo, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Pat Thomas, and Lamisi Akuka, who was formerly with the Patchbay Band.

Somuah, who now resides in the Netherlands, grew up in Jamestown, Accra, and has always been deeply connected to Ghanaian rhythms. His travels have allowed him to incorporate various styles into his music, but Highlife continues to resonate with him, prompting the creation of this homage.

Understanding that Highlife has evolved over time by embracing diverse influences, Somuah crafted songs that reflect its journey. He blends elements such as big band sounds, local rhythmic styles, and resonant vocal themes, emphasizing the genre’s enduring spirit.

“Highlife belongs to us, and it can maintain its essence while welcoming new elements to broaden its appeal. Popular music is always changing,” Somuah explains. “What I’m doing is uniting the old and new generations through fresh Highlife interpretations.”

One notable track on the album is ‘Chop Chop’, featuring Ambolley, which addresses the issue of corruption.

Ambolley, who has known Somuah since his time in Ghana, praises Somuah’s impressive musicianship, stating that it allows him to stand out among top-tier players. “It’s a fantastic album, and we need more of this genre to promote our culture and all the wonderful aspects of who we are to the world. I appreciate what he’s doing,” Ambolley expressed.

Other highlights of the album include ‘We Give Thanks’ featuring Pat Thomas, ‘African Continent’ with Lamisi Akuka on lead vocals, ‘Mental Slavery’ where Somuah himself sings, and ‘Bruce Road’, which captures the essence of Somuah’s beloved Jamestown.

Somuah previously released two albums: ‘Outer Space’ in 2022 and ‘Letter to the Universe’ in 2023. ‘Highlife’ will be available on all major digital music platforms starting November 1, 2024.
