The Ghanaian political landscape has been shaken by the passing of Akua Donkor, leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), who died on Monday, October 28, at Ridge Hospital in Accra. Her demise has left many in shock.
Akua Donkor was a prominent and spirited advocate in Ghanaian politics, dedicated to championing the rights of farmers and women. As the founder of the GFP, she became a recognizable figure, often attracting public attention with her bold and outspoken approach to addressing the needs of grassroots communities.
Determined to challenge the status quo, she famously opposed providing free education to members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Known for her strength and resilience, she fought for the voices of women to be heard and valued, striving to reshape the political conversation.
Reactions to her leadership were mixed. Some viewed her as unqualified for the presidency, while others appreciated her unique speaking style as a source of relief from stress. “In my view, Akua Donkor does not qualify to run for president; however, she is a well-equipped and knowledgeable woman,” noted one man.
A woman reflected on her journey, saying, “We know Akua Donkor as an NDC candidate who later built her own party. I was shocked by her passing and wondered what her party will do now. I liked her approach and enjoyed listening to her.”
