National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has fired back at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia after Bawumia posed 50 questions aimed at challenging Mahama’s record.
Citing a famous line from former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, John Mahama asserted that the 2024 election focus should be on Ghana’s economy, not irrelevant distractions.
Speaking to a crowd in Savelugu during his three-day Northern Region tour, Mr. Mahama criticized Bawumia’s questions, describing them as lacking substance.
“I woke up this morning to see 50 questions from Dr. Bawumia,” Mahama said. “I have just five simple questions for him, focused solely on the economy—the real issue affecting Ghanaians today. He can talk about compost plants all he wants, but that’s not what Ghanaians need right now.”
John Mahama reminded the audience of the U.S. election between Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, when Clinton’s team, during an economic recession, famously emphasized, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Mr. Mahama echoed that sentiment, stating, “This election is about the economy, stupid.”
At a rally in Tatali, John Mahama also challenged Bawumia to answer his five economic questions instead of deflecting with a debate challenge.
He referenced the 170 questions Bawumia posed to the late former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur in 2016. “Back then, you didn’t need a debate to answer questions,” Mr. Mahama stated. “Today, answer the five simple questions Ghanaians are asking—no debate required.”
John Mahama’s response underscores his position that Ghana’s struggling economy should be the focal point of the 2024 election, and he has challenged Bawumia to directly address the pressing issues affecting Ghanaians.
