John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has laid out his vision for transforming the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy if re-elected, promising to improve upon the framework currently implemented by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In his recent address to the people of Yendi during his tour of the Northern Region, John Mahama expressed concern over the NPP’s management of the Free SHS initiative.
He criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for not fully realizing the policy’s potential, asserting that it has not been effectively administered to benefit all students.
John Mahama lamented the NPP’s decision to neglect the unfinished educational infrastructure he initiated, which could have significantly bolstered the Free SHS program.
He emphasized that these abandoned projects could have provided vital support to the initiative, facilitating better access to quality education for Ghanaian youth.
One of Mr. Mahama’s key promises is the abolition of the controversial double track system, which has been a point of contention among parents and educators alike.
“The NDC is committed to enhancing the Free SHS policy,” he stated emphatically. “We will eliminate the double track system, allowing all our children to attend school together. They should be able to stay in school for two or three months, ensuring that when they break, they can return home together.”
Further addressing the audience, John Mahama criticized the current government’s implementation of the Free SHS policy, which he argued has placed an additional financial burden on parents.
He articulated the need for a more comprehensive approach that alleviates these pressures rather than exacerbating them.
Confident in the NDC’s prospects for the upcoming elections, John Mahama urged supporters to see this as a pivotal opportunity to reset the country’s educational landscape.
He believes that a victory for the NDC will usher in a new era of accessibility and quality in education, ultimately benefiting Ghana’s youth and the nation as a whole.
