The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called for calm and patience among residents of Bawku as tension flares up following the resurgencechieftaincy clashes.
The renewed conflict, which reignited on Sunday, October 27, 2024, saw the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, fueling fresh disputes.
During a campaign rally in Saboba as part of his Northern regional tour, Mr. Mahama urged all parties involved to refrain from any actions that could incite violence or worsen the situation.
Speaking directly to his supporters and addressing the residents of Bawku, the former President underscored the crucial role of peaceful dialogue in bridging the divides and finding lasting solutions.
“Without peace, there can not be progress,” Mr. Mahama asserted, alluding to the importance of a stable environment for national development.
He took the opportunity to criticize the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), noting that conflicts often seem to resurface under their governance, stirring political concerns over the administration’s handling of local conflicts “Anytime Ghana’s peace is threatened, it seems to be under the NPP government’s watch,” he remarked, expressing his frustration with the current leadership’s approach.
Mr. Mahama also highlighted what he described as “sinister hands” behind the unrest, warning that there may be individuals or groups intentionally fueling ethnic tensions for ulterior motives.
In his address, he passionately appealed to Bawku’s residents and key stakeholders to maintain composure and avoid any provocation that could further destabilize the region.
“I am appealing to the people of Bawku and all stakeholders to exercise patience and restraint,” he stated.
“We know that there are forces at play attempting to stoke the flames of ethnic conflict, but we must not fall prey to their designs”.
Mr. Mahama further pledged that if elected in the upcoming December 7 election, his government would prioritize restoring harmony in Bawku and other affected areas.
Reaffirming his commitment to the region’s stability, he assured the people that an NDC-led administration would work diligently to address the roots of the conflict.
“They should not allow themselves to be provoked into violence,” he urged. “I beg you, the people of Bawku, to remain calm, practice restraint, and refrain from conflict.
The NDC is coming, and when we take office, we will make sure that peace returns to Bawku and its surrounding areas.”
