Aitana Bonmatí Crowned Ballon d’Or Champion Again

Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí has clinched the women’s Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive year.

Last season, Bonmatí played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s historic quadruple, leading the team to victory in Liga F, the Champions League, Supercopa, and Copa de la Reina. The 26-year-old also notched a personal best, scoring 19 goals across all competitions.

In February, she was instrumental in Spain’s triumph in the inaugural Women’s Nations League, contributing four goals, including one in the decisive 2-0 win against France in the final.

Upon receiving her award in Paris, Bonmatí expressed her gratitude:

“Thank you so much for your applause. I’m so grateful to be here to receive this award for the second time. I always say this is not something that you can do alone; I’m so lucky to be surrounded by wonderful players who help me keep growing.”

In the voting, England’s Lauren James secured a commendable 13th place, while team-mates Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp finished 20th and 28th, respectively.

Additionally, Emma Hayes made history as the first-ever winner of the women’s coach of the year award, having led Chelsea to their fifth straight Women’s Super League title and guiding the U.S. to Olympic gold in Paris 2024.
