John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep concern over the recent rise in ethnic tensions in Bawku, attributing these conflicts to what he described as “sinister hands” attempting to escalate the situation.
In recent days, reports of gunfire have once again echoed through the streets of Bawku, resulting in fatalities, as local security forces confirm the ongoing violence.
Speaking to a gathering in Saboba as part of his three-day tour of the Northern Region, John Mahama condemned the unfolding events in Bawku, questioning the stability of the region under the current government.
“It is unfortunate that whenever Ghana’s peace is threatened, it seems to coincide with the NPP being in power,” he remarked, highlighting a troubling pattern he perceives during this administration.
John Mahama underscored the urgent need for calm, acknowledging the serious implications of the ongoing conflict.
“What is happening in Bawku is not just a local issue; it poses a threat to our national peace. I urge the people of Bawku and all stakeholders involved to exercise patience and restraint during this turbulent time.”
The former president insisted that there are forces at play, intentionally trying to exacerbate ethnic divisions.
He reassured the people of Bawku that a future NDC government would prioritize restoring peace in the region.
“We are aware that there are some sinister hands attempting to stoke the fires of ethnic conflict. I urge you not to be provoked. Stay calm, for the NDC is coming, and we will ensure that peace returns to Bawku,” he declared, aiming to inspire hope amidst the chaos.
His remarks resonate with the growing call for unity and dialogue in a region plagued by strife, as he positions himself as a beacon of stability and peace for the future.
