“The determination of which political party constitutes Minority or Majority in Parliament is done by the Ghanaian electorates at the polls,” the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Ghana’s Parliament was caught up in sporadic tension following the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on 17th October 2024, after the leader of the NDC caucus, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, triggered the attention of the speaker on the decisions of some four Members to contest as Independent candidates.
The Members of Parliament include, Agona West MP, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, Suhum MP, Kojo Asante, Amenfi Central, Kofi Ackah and the Fomena MP, Andrews Amoako Asiamah, who is the incumbent 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
The declaration of the three seats of NPP and one seat of the NDC vacant therefore, makes the NDC caucus, a Majority caucus with 136 NDC sponsored MPs while the NPP reduces to 135 NPP sponsored MPs.
However, the NPP has a divergent view of the parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
According to the leadership of the NPP, the NDC is desperately looking for avenues to become the majority in parliament, but added that, the Ghanaian electorates are the determinants of the sought position.
In a press release dated 23rd October, 2024, the NPP General’s secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said, “We wish to remind the NDC and the desperate minority Caucus in parliament that in Ghana, the determination of which political party constitutes Minority or Majority in Parliament is done by the Ghanaian electorates at the polls. It is not manufactured in Parliament with the aid of a partisan Speaker.”
The NPP further added that, the NDC should be guided by the free advice given by the flagbearer and vice president of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has advised the NDC to focus on winning the majority seats at the polling station and not by the whims and caprices of a partisan Speaker of parliament.
“The NDC is a lawless entity who just want chaos at all times and cannot find civil ways of resolving challenges. If the NPP majority caucus hadn’t taken the high ground, and remained on the side of the law, we would have fights in the august chamber and this would have dented the image of Ghana globally heat up the atmosphere ahead of December elections. Those lawless group is not one to be trusted with the reins of power,” Justin Kodua Frimpong added.
