NDC Insight Calls Out NPP’s Empty Promises on Galamsey: A Legacy of Looting and Deceit
Accra, Ghana – NDC Insight has issued a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its government, accusing them of failing to deliver on their promises to combat illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey.” Dr. Anthony Sorkpah, the communications officer for NDC Insight, emphasized that the rhetoric from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his administration has been nothing more than a series of cheap and empty promises.
In 2016, Oppong Nkrumah, asserted that the government could end Galamsey if it truly wanted to. However, Dr. Sorkpah pointed out that the time for talk has long passed, and the nation has still grappling with the devastating impacts of this generational disaster for 8 years under Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia. The politicization of national disasters, especially in the context of Galamsey, is both sad and troubling.
President Akufo-Addo boldly pledged in 2022 to eliminate Galamsey by the end of his term in office, yet, despite allocating $30 million quarterly—totaling an alarming $90 million annually—to the Galamsey committee, the results have been glaringly absent. “What has been done with this money?” Dr. Sorkpah questioned, noting that under the NPP’s watch, Ghana has lost an estimated $720 million due to the ineffective response to illegal mining. Instead of progress, Ghanaians are left with polluted water bodies and an ongoing crisis.
Dr. Sorkpah further revealed that the NPP, led by Nana Addo and his associates, holds 320 Galamsey licenses documented in the infamous Agyapadey book. In a particularly perplexing move, President Akufo-Addo challenged former President John Mahama to declare his stance on Galamsey, while conveniently ignoring the complicity of his own administration in the issue. Dr. Sorkpah argued that asking Mahama to address Galamsey is merely a distraction from the NPP’s failure to act. “How can Mahama end Galamsey when the presidency is deeply involved?” he questioned.
The NDC Insight also scrutinized the government’s financial mismanagement, citing the $3 million spent on drones purportedly for combating Galamsey, which remain unaccounted for. Similarly, the five-speed boats purchased in 2018 under the leadership of former Minister Peter Amewu have yet to show results.
Dr. Sorkpah concluded by reminding Ghanaians of President Akufo-Addo’s own words from 2014: “We don’t own this land; we hold it in trust for generations unborn.” He implored the public to reflect on these promises and recognize the NPP’s track record of looting and deception.
As Ghanaians look towards the future, NDC Insight urges the populace to demand accountability from their leaders and to support a government that genuinely prioritizes the welfare of the people over personal gain.
