Chief Biney Hamilton Nixon, Deputy Campaign Coordinator for Special Operations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced his strong disapproval of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent challenge to former President John Dramani Mahama on the ongoing galamsey crisis.
In a sharp rebuke, Chief Biney accused the President of indulging in political grandstanding rather than taking the urgent, decisive actions needed to combat the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining.
In his statement, Chief Biney dismissed Akufo-Addo’s demand for Mr. Mahama to clarify his stance on galamsey as an unnecessary distraction. He argued that the NDC had already presented clear and robust plans to tackle the galamsey menace in its 2024 manifesto.
“It’s disingenuous for the President to demand clarity from someone not in executive power,” he said, adding that the real burden of responsibility lies with the current administration.
Highlighting the grave state of Ghana’s rivers and the displacement of communities due to rampant illegal mining, Chief Biney pointed out that the situation has only worsened under President Akufo-Addo’s watch.
He criticized the President for failing to act, saying, “The people of Ghana expect their President to govern, not campaign.”
He further urged the government to move beyond political blame games and focus on enforcing laws to halt the destructive galamsey operations. “Ghanaians need leadership that delivers solutions, not posturing,” he emphasized, calling for decisive action to restore the environment and secure a sustainable future for the country.
Chief Biney’s remarks resonate with growing public frustration over the government’s inaction on the galamsey crisis, as he reiterated: “Ghana needs leadership now more than ever. It’s time to focus on governing, not campaigning.”
