GAPTE Boosts Aayalolo Fleet to 245 Buses Amid Transport Crisis

Acting Managing Director of the Ghana Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), Awudu Dawuda, revealed that the agency now operates 245 Aayalolo buses across Ghana to tackle the nation’s ongoing public transportation challenges.

Dawuda shared the update during a briefing for Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at GAPTE’s Accra office on Friday, January 16, 2026. He highlighted fleet expansions to meet rising passenger demand, with 105 buses now running on Accra’s transit corridors—up from 80—60 in Kumasi and 10 in Tamale.

Breaking down the numbers, he noted: 12 buses at the University of Cape Coast and University of Health and Allied Sciences (5 buses), 2 in Tamale Transport Operations, 5 at Swissport at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), 2 for Aviance Commuters, 2 for Civil Aviation Commuters, and 3 for Ghana Airports Company Limited.

Of the total fleet, 11 buses are grounded for major repairs like engine replacements, while 28 are in maintenance at the depot, leaving 175 actively in service when accounting for the Kumasi and Tamale deployments.

Dawuda emphasized that these expansions address the current transport crisis, with GAPTE now managing eight major transit corridors six core routes plus two new ones to ease congestion and boost capacity.
