‘Even religious bodies have seen the light’ – Bridget Otoo drags GMA over abstinence from strike

Media personality Bridget Otoo expressed surprise at the Ghana Medical Association’s decision not to participate in the nationwide strike planned for October 10, 2024.

In a post on X dated October 9, 2024, she highlighted her astonishment, comparing the stance of the GMA, a scientific institution, to that of religious bodies, which she described as believing in miracles.

She questioned why the GMA, grounded in science, chose not to join the protest while religious bodies were taking a stand on the galamsey issue.

The GMA, in a statement on October 8, announced its decision not to participate in the planned strike, emphasizing its commitment to continue providing healthcare services to those in need while expressing solidarity with the fight against galamsey.

However, the GMA’s stance sparked varied reactions on social media, with some supporting the prioritization of healthcare responsibilities and others, including Bridget Otoo, criticizing the association for not taking a more active role in the protest.

The nationwide strike scheduled for October 10 aimed to pressure the government into implementing stricter measures to address the escalating environmental disaster caused by the galamsey crisis. The call for the strike came amidst mounting demands from labor groups, environmentalists, health practitioners, clergy, and concerned citizens.
