Former Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, has publicly expressed his deep admiration and respect for fellow coach, Akwasi Appiah, emphasizing the latter’s contributions to Ghanaian football. In a recent interview during the announcement of the Black Stars squad for the African Cup qualifiers, Addo, who is coaching the senior team for the second time, spoke highly of Appiah’s leadership and pioneering role in shaping the Black Stars’ journey over the years.
Addo acknowledged that Appiah’s tenure as the head coach of the national team set a standard for many upcoming coaches in the country. He praised Appiah for his tactical knowledge, calm demeanour, and ability to steer the Black Stars to remarkable achievements, including leading Ghana to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
“Akwasi Appiah has done a lot for Ghana football. He was a trailblazer, and many of us who have had the privilege of coaching the Black Stars look up to him,” Addo stated. “I have immense respect for his dedication and the way he handled the national team during his tenure. It’s not an easy task managing a team like the Black Stars, and he did it with dignity and skill.”
Addo, who had his first stint as Black Stars coach during the 2022 World Cup campaign, went on to highlight the importance of learning from experienced coaches like Appiah. He noted that while every coach has their approach, Appiah’s calm and professional demeanour, coupled with his deep understanding of Ghanaian football culture, are qualities worthy of emulation.
Akwasi Appiah, who is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Ghana’s national team, remains an influential figure in African football. His leadership style and his success in integrating both local and foreign-based players into the squad have been praised by many in the football community.
Addo’s remarks come at a time when Ghanaian football is undergoing significant changes, with a renewed focus on developing local talent and promoting the national league. His comments reflect the ongoing respect and camaraderie among Ghanaian coaches as they work towards elevating the Black Stars to even greater heights on the global stage.
