Former UN governance expert, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has urged President Akufo-Addo to act swiftly in addressing key demands made by Organized Labour in order to avert a looming nationwide strike.
With just under a week before the planned strike over the government’s handling of the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis, Prof. Agyeman-Duah stressed that it is crucial for the government to engage labour leaders and meet their core demands to prevent the country from coming to a standstill.
He noted that the grievances raised by Organized Labour, particularly regarding the environmental and economic damage caused by illegal mining, reflect the deep frustration among workers and the general public.
According to him, the government cannot afford to downplay the urgency of the situation, as the strike could have far-reaching consequences on national productivity and stability.
Prof. Agyeman-Duah emphasized that the government should not only seek to resolve the galamsey issue but also take immediate steps to address the broader concerns of workers, including fair wages, better working conditions, and transparency in dealing with illegal mining.
He called on President Akufo-Addo to engage in meaningful dialogue with labour leaders, reminding him that swift and concrete action is necessary to maintain peace and stability in the country.
With tensions rising, many Ghanaians are looking to the government for decisive leadership to address the issues at hand and prevent a nationwide crisis.
