We will audit all mining concessions and their owners when I become President – Mahama to Clergy

The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to conduct a comprehensive audit of all mining concessions across the country if elected in the December 2024 elections.

Speaking during a “Worship with the Clergy” event in Accra on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Mahama emphasized that the audit would not only assess the mining concessions but also uncover the identities of those who own and operate them.

Mahama stressed that the primary objective of the audit would be to hold concession owners accountable for any illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey,” that have taken place on their lands. He explained that illegal mining has caused severe environmental damage, particularly to rivers and forests, and that those responsible must face consequences.

“We must ensure that those entrusted with mining concessions adhere to the rules and regulations, and that they are not complicit in the destruction of our natural resources,” Mahama stated.

In addition to identifying the true owners of mining concessions, Mahama’s proposed audit would seek to strengthen regulatory oversight of the mining sector.

He noted that this initiative would involve increased collaboration with law enforcement and environmental agencies to ensure that illegal mining is eradicated and that Ghana’s natural resources are protected for future generations.

The NDC leader also reiterated his commitment to reforming the mining sector to make it more transparent and accountable.

He called for stricter enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, emphasizing that responsible mining practices are essential for the sustainable development of the country.

Mahama’s promise of an audit comes as part of his broader campaign to tackle corruption and mismanagement in various sectors of the economy.

His stance on illegal mining has garnered attention in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, as the issue remains a significant concern for many Ghanaians, particularly those in affected communities.

As the election campaign progresses, Mahama’s proposed mining reforms are expected to resonate with voters who are seeking stronger environmental protection and greater accountability in the exploitation of the nation’s natural resources.
