Galamsey: Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s comment is disrespectful – Dr. Jehu Appiah

Dr. Jehu Appiah, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Manifesto Spokesperson on Health, has criticized New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, for his recent comments seemingly endorsing illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Dr. Ayew Afriyie, who also serves as the Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, suggested during a campaign event that efforts to fight galamsey would harm the NPP’s chances of retaining power, particularly in mining areas.

He further alleged that the campaign against illegal mining was a strategy by political opponents to weaken the NPP’s electoral prospects.

He even accused the NDC of importing foreign nationals to engage in galamsey, which has severely impacted Ghana’s water bodies.

In response, Dr. Jehu Appiah expressed his disappointment with Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s remarks, calling them irresponsible.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s morning show, ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem,’ he stressed that individuals holding such views should not occupy positions of power, especially when it comes to public health and national welfare.

“It is disappointing. No one in the medical profession should joke about the welfare of Ghanaians. We are aware of the devastating consequences of galamsey, including increased cases of kidney disease, cancer, neurological issues, stillbirths, maternal deaths, and the dangers posed by open mining pits. To prioritize votes over the health and safety of citizens shows a lack of vision and responsibility. Such individuals should not be in public office,” Dr. Jehu Appiah told Citizen Kofi Owusu.

He also highlighted that prominent figures, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, have been vocal in calling for an end to galamsey.

He believes that Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s comments are not only disappointing but also disrespectful to these dignitaries, and he called on him to issue a public apology.

Furthermore, Dr. Jehu Appiah urged the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to condemn the statements and distance itself from Dr. Ayew Afriyie’s views, stressing that no responsible doctor should make light of the dire health consequences associated with illegal mining.

“The GMA must make it clear that we, as healthcare professionals, prioritize the health of the people above political interests,” he emphasized.

The debate over galamsey has become increasingly contentious, as its impact on the environment and public health continues to escalate.

The NDC spokesperson’s remarks underscore the importance of responsible leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people over political expediency.
