Presidential Candidate for the Movement for Change, Alan Kyeremanten has called on the Attorney General (AG) to apply for nolle prosequi to end the court case involving the Democracy Hub protestors.
This follows the ongoing prosecution of some members of the Democracy Hub who were on a demonstration from September 21 to 23 aimed at stopping illegal mining activities but it turned violent with the police officers.
The protesters blocked roads, and obstructed traffic at the 37 Intersections. Currently, 54 protesters are being held, with 9 in prison custody and the remaining in police custody for two weeks.
While condemning the excessive actions that occurred during the protest, Alan Kyeremanten during a press conference expressed strong disagreement with the decision to remand protesters for two weeks, labeling it as unlawful and unconstitutional and emphasizing its negative implications for human rights protection.
“While I commend the police for their professionalism during the protest, the poor post-arrest management of the protestors by the Police has been unlawful and unconstitutional”, he said.
The flag bearer also hinted at providing legal representation to some of the protesters.
In the fight against galamsey, Mr. Kyeremanten accused the NPP of only engaging in lip service.
According to him, he will fight the illegal mining menace head-on when voted as President.
