A member of the National Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhunyini, has insisted that former President John Dramani Mahama’s description of Ghana as a “crime scene” was not political exaggeration but a factual reflection of the state of the country he inherited.
According to Suhunyini, when President Mahama was sworn into office and delivered his first State of the Nation Address, he was emphatic that Ghana’s economic fortunes had been severely damaged over the previous eight years under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He explained that the statement was based on disturbing discoveries made immediately after assuming office.
Suhunyini noted that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including their Members of Parliament, strongly criticised President Mahama at the time, accusing him of using rhetoric to tarnish the image of the NPP. However, he argued that daily revelations continue to confirm that the former president’s remarks were grounded in fact, not politics.
He cited the National Cathedral project as a key example, describing it as “the most expensive hole in Ghana,” allegedly constructed at a cost exceeding 97 million US dollars based on figures he described as unacceptable and unjustifiable.
Suhunyini further pointed to the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) deal, which he said exposed Ghanaian taxpayers to questionable expenditure running into more than 1.4 billion Ghana cedis, despite what he claims was no clear evidence of work done.
According to him, these examples validate President Mahama’s earlier claims and expose the scale of economic mismanagement and alleged corruption that characterised the previous administration.
