British-Nigerian singer Darkoo recently shared her experience of coming out to her Nigerian parents as a lesbian. In an interview with Layo on The Appointment Show, Darkoo described the journey of revealing her truth to her parents.
She explained that it was particularly challenging with her mother due to their close bond. Darkoo expressed that telling her mum was a significant relief, and she has been happy ever since.
She emphasized that being open about her identity has brought her a sense of freedom and happiness. The singer also mentioned that while it was easier to have the conversation with her father, he was not entirely open to it.
She spoke about the emotional difficulty of sharing this part of her life with her mother, acknowledging the closeness of their relationship. However, Darkoo also highlighted that living authentically is essential to her well-being.
She emphasized that being true to herself has brought her a sense of wholeness and authenticity, and she feels spiritually aligned with her decision.
Despite her parents not fully aligning with her sexuality due to cultural differences, Darkoo shared that they have accepted her and continue to love her unconditionally. She mentioned that her parents have been supportive, even when introducing her partners to them.
Darkoo expressed gratitude for having parents who love her for who she is, despite their differing perspectives, and she emphasized the importance of being true to oneself.
