Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Calls for United Effort to Combat Galamsey and Protect Ghana’s Environment.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a unified national effort to combat the ongoing menace of illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey,” which has wreaked havoc on Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.

Speaking on the critical issue, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II described Galamsey as an “environmental enemy” that poses a severe threat to the nation’s ecological balance and the well-being of its citizens.

He expressed deep concern over the widespread use of harmful chemicals, particularly mercury, in these illegal mining operations, which have led to the contamination of vital water sources.

The Asantehene questioned the country’s legal framework and enforcement mechanisms, asking pointedly what actions the nation’s laws prescribe for those who deliberately pollute water supply sources with such toxic substances.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he called on all stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, traditional leaders, and local communities, to join forces in eradicating Galamsey. The Asantehene emphasized that protecting Ghana’s natural resources is not just a governmental responsibility but a collective one that requires the active participation and vigilance of every citizen to ensure a sustainable future.
