Dr Fred Awaah, the spokesperson for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on sports, has assured Ghanaians that the party will prioritise transforming the country’s sports sector if it wins the upcoming general elections. Speaking in an interview on Ahotor FM’s Sports show dubbed ‘Agorokansie’, Dr Awaah outlined key strategies aimed at revitalizing sports in Ghana, which he described as a critical tool for national development.
According to Dr Awaah, the NDC is committed to implementing a comprehensive agenda to address the challenges facing the sports sector. He emphasized that when elected into power, the party will ensure that infrastructural development and funding become top priorities to drive the growth of both local and international sporting activities.
“We understand the importance of sports in fostering unity, creating jobs, and placing Ghana on the global map. Under the leadership of the NDC, we will ensure that the country’s sports sector is adequately resourced and modernized to enable our athletes to compete globally,” Dr Awaah said.
He highlighted the party’s plan to restore and revamp sports infrastructure across the country, focusing on facilities for football, athletics, boxing, and other sporting disciplines. Dr Awaah also mentioned that the NDC intends to create sustainable funding avenues for sports development, including a reformed sports policy to promote grassroots development and invest in talent scouting and training.
Furthermore, Dr Awaah promised that the NDC will improve the welfare of athletes by working with stakeholders to establish better remuneration systems and support networks for sports professionals, ensuring that they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Dr Awaah’s remarks have sparked excitement among sports enthusiasts who believe that the sector is long overdue for serious reform. Many Ghanaians are optimistic that, if implemented, the NDC’s policies could rejuvenate the nation’s sports industry and enhance Ghana’s competitive standing on the global stage.
With the 2024 elections fast approaching, the NDC’s commitment to sports development is expected to be a major talking point as the party campaigns across the country.
