Who is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia?
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the Vice President of Ghana and was sworn in with the Holy Quran at the Flagstaff House, symbolizing his commitment to the Muslim community. However, has he lived up to the expectations associated with this symbolism?
What Defines His Muslim Identity?
Dr. Bawumia’s actions, or lack thereof, raise questions about his commitment to the Muslim community. In July 2018, seven Muslim men—Abdul Hanan Bashir, Musah Seidu, Mohammed Bashir Musah, Mohammed Kamal, Babonte Farar, Razak Sulley, and Oliver Konlang—were shot and killed by police after being falsely accused of armed robbery. Despite their innocence being established, the 21 policemen responsible remain free, as reported by Graphic Online. Bawumia, then and now the Vice President, has not addressed this issue.
On January 16, 2019, investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein Suale was murdered by unknown gunmen after MP Kennedy Agyapong publicly incited violence against him. As Vice President and a representative of the Muslim community, Bawumia failed to speak out.
During the 2020 elections, four Muslims—Tajudeen Alhassan (39), Abdallah Ayoric (18), Samira Zakaria, and Ibrahim Abass (30)—were killed. Yet, Bawumia remained silent. Is this the behavior of someone committed to the values he claims to uphold?
Recently, on July 13, 2024, musician and politician Kwame Asare Obeng (A-Plus) revealed on Facebook Live that he knows the identity of Ahmed Suale’s killer, vowing to hold daily press conferences if necessary. This raises concerns about the effectiveness and commitment of our Muslim Vice President.
Bawumia has also remained silent on issues such as the Adhan (call to prayer), the hijab in schools, and the status of the Zongo Ministries. What has become of the promised Hajj fare support and the $50 million annual Zongo Development Fund? Progress on the Ansaarudeen mosque for the National Chief Imam and the construction of 16 model schools in Zongo communities remains unclear.
The National Muslim Conference’s 2024 manifesto proposals have yet to be addressed by Bawumia. His lack of action suggests he does not genuinely support the Muslim community.
When asked recently about whether President Akufo-Addo had commented on the killings of eight electorates during the 2020 elections, Bawumia responded that he was unaware. This raises serious concerns about his regard for the Muslim electorate.
Inna Lillah Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un—may their souls rest in peace.
Every Muslim Life Matters. Say No to Bawumia.
