NDC and Electoral Commission Clash Over Voter Register Integrity Before December Polls

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its technical team are actively challenging the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the electoral process remains transparent and fair as the December elections approach. The party is scrutinizing every aspect of the EC’s conduct to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming presidential election and ensure that every vote is counted fairly, without the need for judicial intervention.

Dr. Rashid Tanko, Deputy Director of Elections for the NDC, discussed these concerns on the Simpieso political show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Emmanuel Amatey (Alaska De Don) in Accra. Dr. Tanko emphasized that the NDC’s strategic team will continually review the voter register to identify and address any discrepancies. Any issues found will be communicated to both the public and the EC to help ensure a free and transparent election.

In response to political pressure, the Electoral Commission has announced the release of the provisional voter register to political parties in preparation for the voter register exhibition scheduled from August 20 to August 27, 2024.

At a press conference held at the EC headquarters on Monday, Deputy Electoral Commissioner Dr. Bossman Asare assured that the commission is adhering to its timeline for distributing the provisional register. “Despite media reports suggesting otherwise, we want to confirm that the commission is in compliance with Regulation 22 of CI 31, as amended by CI 126. This regulation requires us to provide the provisional register to political parties no later than three months after the end of the registration period,” Dr. Asare explained.

He further noted that the limited registration period ended on May 29, 2024, and the mop-up registration concluded on August 3, 2023. According to this timeline, the commission has until the end of August 2024 to provide the provisional register to the political parties. Dr. Asare confirmed that the provisional registers are now available for collection, and the NDC, along with other parties, has picked up their external drives containing the data.

Dr. Asare also reiterated that the voter register exhibition will begin on August 20 and run through August 27, 2024.
