NPP Manifesto: Tax amnesty does not change the behavior of the tax payer – Prof John Gatsi tells Dr Bawumia.

Professor John Gatsi, Dean of the University of Cape Coast School of Business, has responded to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the proposed tax amnesty in the NPP’s 2024 manifesto.

Dr. Bawumia’s proposal includes nine major tax reforms aimed at transforming Ghana’s economy, one of which is the tax amnesty.

Professor Gatsi expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of tax amnesty in changing taxpayer behavior, noting that this approach is not new in Ghana.

He pointed out that the country already has a tax amnesty law in place, and simply proposing it again does not bring any novel solutions.

In his comments to the media, as monitored by Onokwafo Yaw Asiedu, Prof. Gatsi emphasized the need to focus on the broader objectives of economic policies and how they benefit the country.

He argued that tax amnesty alone does not significantly alter how Ghanaians approach their tax obligations.

Instead of relying on such measures, he urged the government and Dr. Bawumia to take immediate and concrete actions to improve the economy, rather than seeking another mandate from Ghanaians without offering substantial change.
