The proposal by the vice president to extend validity of Drivers’ license to 10 years should not be mere campaign rhetoric – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union GPRTU has urged the vice president Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to implement his proposal of extending Driver’s license validity to 10 years rather than to waiting for a potential presidency

The Vice President of Ghana and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), is advocating for extensive changes in the way driver’s licenses are renewed.

The Vice President believes the current system is an inconvenience for drivers and should be extended.

Addressing chiefs and other stakeholders at Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said, “Drivers are here. Today, the driver’s license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), all driver’s license holders must renew or validate their licenses every two years from the date of issue.

As a result, motorists suffer harassment from both DVLA officials and the police over the non-renewal of their licenses.

Speaking this morning on Ahotor FM’s “Adekyemu Nsem” show, the Industrial Relations Officer for the GPRTU Abbas Imoro said the union members would welcome this move.

He said this proposal should not be mere campaign rhetoric
