2024 Elections: The NDC won’t go to court and Kan Dapaah is afraid – Peter Lanchene Toobu

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that the 2024 general elections will be unlike any previous elections in Ghana and they will not go to court like the 2020 elections.

Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Member of Parliament for Wa West, stated that the party will not rely on the courts to resolve any election disputes as the judiciary now can’t be trusted because of President Akufo-Addo’s actions.

During an interview on Accra-based Ahotor FM’s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem’ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Mr. Toobu emphasized that the NDC will not tolerate any mistakes from the Electoral Commission in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

His remarks follow concerns expressed by National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah about the lack of trust in the country’s judiciary among politicians.

Kan Dapaah highlighted this issue, worrying that the judicial system is not trusted to handle electoral disputes fairly.

The National Security Minister says commentary by political actors ahead of the December 7 polls leaves much to be desired.

Speaking at a forum in Accra, Albert Kan Dappah said politicians should not run down the Judiciary.

“We may for the first time experience a situation where none of the major political parties will be willing to explore the courts to address their grievances.

“Indeed I have heard some senior people in the political space saying that, that they have lost faith in the courts’ ability to address their concerns when it comes to elections. So this can create a situation that can set the stage for chaos.”

“And it underscores the need for us to build a robust and transparent electoral system where results coming from same will be acceptable by all parties.”

The Minister further urged citizens to prioritise peace in the upcoming polls.

“Ghanaians must also be aware of their responsibilities. They must not allow themselves to be used by politicians who lose elections. Peace is very expensive and sometimes we have to make sacrifices one time or the other to maintain it. So may nobody participate in violence. So those who lose, accept it peacefully,”
