Dr. Ayariga Advocates for Reform as Vice President Bawumia Campaigns for Presidency

There is growing concern about the need for reforms in Ghana’s democratic structures, particularly regarding the election of the President and Vice President. Critics argue that current practices may lead to abuses of office and undermine the fairness of the electoral process.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the current Vice President, has recently been elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, there are calls for him to step down from his vice-presidential position before contesting in the presidential election. This call for resignation mirrors the precedent set by other ministers who resigned prior to entering the presidential primaries.

Critics argue that Dr. Bawumia’s continued tenure as Vice President while campaigning for the presidency creates an uneven playing field for other candidates in the upcoming December 7 polls. They contend that he continues to benefit from state protocols and resources associated with his current office.

Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the flagbearer and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), voiced these concerns during an interview on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu. Dr. Ayariga emphasized the need for state institutions to ensure a fair and level playing field for all candidates, allowing Ghanaians to make their choices through a transparent and unbiased election process.

Dr. Ayariga proposed that Ghana should adopt a constitutional instrument (CI) requiring a sitting Vice President to resign if they seek the presidency. This would ensure that the Vice President’s office is not compromised and prevent the misuse of government resources for election campaigns.

Dr. Ayariga’s call underscores the broader need for reforms to enhance fairness and integrity in Ghana’s electoral process.
