The four-time African champions in basketball Nigeria women’s basketball team stunned the Australia basketball team at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a 75-65 victory at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France.
Competing in their second consecutive Summer Games, Nigeria responded with a stellar performance led by Ezinne Kalu. The team took the lead after the first quarter with a score of 18-17, largely attributed to Kalu’s impressive 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Amy Okonkwo and Elizabeth Balogun further compounded the challenges for the Opals, allowing the D’Tigresses to head into halftime with a surprising 41-28 lead. Ezinne Kalu, with 19 points and five rebounds, orchestrated a remarkable win for the 12th-ranked team in the world.
Nigeria now requires just one victory against either the host nation France or Canada in group B to enhance their chances of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Olympics in Paris.
