John Dramani Mahama, the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has responded to concerns about the benefits of a four-year term if he becomes President again. During the NDC’s campaign kickoff in Tamale on July 27, Mahama stated that “four years of strong leadership” is much better than the “untrustworthy leadership” seen under the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Some people, like Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, believe that if Mahama becomes president for four years, it might not be enough time to fix big problems or handle the serious economic challenges that the NPP government has made worse. Mahama disagrees with this idea and says that four years is plenty of time to make important improvements and changes, as long as the leader is truthful, dedicated to good leadership, and uses resources wisely.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s eight years or four years,” Mahama stated. “What matters is the quality of the service provided, the commitment, and the honesty of the leaders who can create a brighter future for our young people.” He encouraged Ghanaians to back the NDC to “improve the country.”
Mahama also criticized the current NPP administration for not understanding the real issues faced by Ghanaians, accusing them of refusing to acknowledge the worsening economic conditions. “If the government were aware of the reality, they wouldn’t say that people are happy when hunger is so obvious,” he stated.
Furthermore, Mahama shared that the NDC intends to release its manifesto in the Central Region by the end of August. This document will detail the main policies and suggestions they have for the country.
