Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claims the upcoming December 7 election is about securing Ghana’s future rather than a race between the NDC and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). He believes Ghana has experienced major setbacks under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership. Kwetey emphasizes the need for all Ghanaians, including NPP members, to join forces to rescue the country from the current government.
At the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday July 27, Kwetey warned about the risks of another NPP win. He argued that giving the NPP another term would signal that the party can waste resources, get involved in corrupt practices, and drive the country into a major economic downturn without facing consequences. He urged Ghanaians, including NPP backers, to cast their votes for the NDC and its nominee, John Dramani Mahama, to bring Ghana back to its former success.
The Tamale campaign event brought together important people like John Dramani Mahama, his running mate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and other high-ranking officials. NDC Members of Parliament candidates for parliament, and supporters also showed up for the event.
National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia shared a new campaign plan for the party. He said this year’s approach will focus on door-to-door and one-on-one chats with voters. “We want to reach out to people through a house-to-house retail campaign,” Nketia said. “It’s cheaper and more effective for our party members to meet people in their villages instead of gathering them in one place.”
Also, the NDC plans to release its manifesto in August, which will include key policies like creating a 24-hour economy, getting rid of ex-gratia.
