The debutants raise the flag of South Sudan in Paris.

In their first Olympic basketball match, South Sudan’s men’s basketball team achieved a remarkable victory over Puerto Rico with a score of 90-79, significantly improving their chances of progressing to the next round of the tournament in Paris.

Coach of the South Sudan basketball team, Royal Ivey, skillfully guided his team to a triumphant comeback after a slow start, dominating Puerto Rico defensively in the second half to secure the 90-79 win.

Wearing their nation’s traditional colours of black, red, and green, the African team not only savoured their maiden Olympic triumph but also highlighted their extraordinary journey from obscurity to emerging dominance in the world of basketball.

South Sudan unleashed a barrage of five 3-pointers in the third quarter to overturn a six-point halftime deficit, outlasting their opponents with a display of physicality and athleticism. Carlik Jones led the charge for South Sudan with 19 points, supported by former NBA player Marial Shayok who contributed 15 points to the team’s victory.

To advance to the knockout round, South Sudan now needs to secure one more victory in their upcoming matches against Team USA and Serbia.
